How to ski in Alpe d'Huez

Down at the village at 1 860 metres, the gentle beginner slopes are grouped together, easy to reach straight from your accommodation without having to head up into the wider lift system. There is plenty of blue terrain here, making up 25 per cent of the piste network, so families can move around the area with confidence before venturing higher.

The higher you go into the system, the more demanding the terrain becomes. The red runs, which account for 35 per cent of the pistes, take over on the middle sections, while the black runs, a further 25 per cent, are found on the steeper flanks up towards the high mountain and the summit at Pic Blanc at 3 330 metres.

With 250 km of piste and 71 lifts, the ski area links up well, and you can move between village, mid-mountain and summit in the same day without having to retrace the same route several times over. The difference in altitude between village and summit is considerable, and the full vertical drop of 1 470 metres is clearly reflected in how long the lift lines appear on the map.

That substantial vertical is also why snow quality varies through the course of the day. Early in the morning, the upper sections towards the glacier hold the best conditions, while the lower runs down towards the village can become heavier going later on. It is worth planning your route for the day around this, so you avoid the queues at the mid-stations in the middle of the day.
