How to ski in Hopfgarten
Hopfgarten lies at 620 metres and serves as one of the quieter gateways into SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental. Beginners and families will find their pistes right by the village centre, where the lifts take you up into a network of blue runs that wind around the foot of the Hohe Salve. With 115 km of blue pistes across the whole system, there is plenty of room to practise without having to mix with the faster traffic higher up.
The more demanding terrain lies higher up towards the summit of the Hohe Salve at 1 869 metres, as well as in the steeper sectors towards the neighbouring villages. That is where you will find most of the 121 km of red pistes and the 39 km of black terrain, with steeper flanks and more varied ground to suit those who already feel confident on skis.
From Hopfgarten you can ski on through the entire SkiWelt system towards Soll, Ellmau and Brixen, one of Austria's largest linked ski areas with a total of 275 km of pistes served by 81 lifts. A single day is rarely enough to explore it all, but the piste network links up well enough for you to do long circuits and still make it back to the village in the afternoon.
A practical tip is to use the morning hours to head up towards the Hohe Salve before the pistes around the village centre get busy in the middle of the day, when both beginners and everyone making their way down towards Hopfgarten converge on the same runs. The vertical drop between the village and the summit often means better snow quality the higher you go, especially later in the season.
