How to ski in Valmorel

Valmorel sits at 1 400 metres, and beginners will find their green and blue pistes immediately above the village, where gentle lifts carry skiers up into easy terrain close to the buildings. Families can move between their accommodation and the nursery slopes without going far, which makes the first few days on skis straightforward.

The redder and blacker sections, making up 30 and 15 per cent of the piste map respectively, lie higher up towards the top of the system at 2 550 metres, on steeper flanks further from the village. More experience is needed here, and the terrain becomes more open and more exposed to the weather the higher you go.

Grand Domaine links several valleys together and makes it possible to travel right across the area, with a total of 165 kilometres of piste and 33 lifts to switch between. A confident skier can cover large parts of the system in a single day, alternating between open high alpine stretches and tree lined pistes lower down.

The vertical drop between the village and the top is 1 150 metres, and it shows clearly in the snow conditions. The snow often holds up better in the upper sections later in the season, while the pistes closest to the village can turn heavy as the day goes on. Around the middle of the day the lifts nearest Valmorel get busy, so early and late sessions give you quieter skiing.
