Together with its neighbour Wildschönau, Alpbach forms the Ski Juwel ski area, with 113 km of pistes.

Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau is one of Tyrol's most affordable ski areas and a genuine gem for families and beginners. The wide, sunny slopes above Alpbach provide ideal conditions for improving your technique, and the beginner areas in the village are among the best in the region. At the same time, there are enough red and black runs to keep intermediate skiers busy.

Since 2012, Alpbach and Wildschönau have been linked via the Schatzbergbahn, giving access to a considerably larger ski area. The Wildschönau side has a different character, with skiing through forest and slightly more challenging terrain, and the transition between the two areas is smooth and scenic.

What makes Alpbach special is its genuine atmosphere. There are no big hotel chains or shopping centres here. Instead, you'll find family-run guesthouses, traditional Gasthäuser, and an atmosphere that feels timelessly Austrian. It's a place for those who value charm and authenticity over glitz and glamour.

Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau offers 113 km of pistes and 46 lifts spread across the Alpbach side and the Wildschönau side. The piste profile is clearly family-friendly, with a majority of wide blue and green runs. The Alpbach side has sunny, open slopes, while Wildschönau offers more varied terrain with skiing through forest. The Schatzbergbahn links the two areas together.

Snow reliability in Alpbach

Alpbach lies at an altitude of 975 metres, which is a relatively low village level for an Alpine ski area. The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area does, however, reach up to 2,025 metres, which means considerably better prospects for snow cover in the higher parts of the system.

As the resort is not classed as snow-sure, it is wise to plan your trip with a degree of flexibility and to rely instead on the pistes higher up in the area, particularly during spells of milder weather down in the valley.

Best time to travel to Alpbach

January and February bring the best snow conditions. March offers plenty of sunny days, but the moderate summit altitude (2,025 m) means the snow can turn heavy late in the season. The half-term weeks are popular, but rarely overcrowded.

Will there be lift queues in Alpbach?

The lift system in Alpbach carries 57,489 people an hour across 45 lifts. 14 of the 45 lifts are gondolas or high-speed chairlifts and 15 are drag lifts, which take longer to get through when it is busy. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,650 people an hour, for example Schatzbergbahn II. That is roughly the same capacity per kilometre of piste as an average resort on this site, so queues only build when it is really busy. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.
