Hintertux in brief

Hintertux is a ski resort in Austria with 60 km of pistes and 20 lifts. Skiing reaches up to 3,250 m above sea level and the village sits at 1,500 m. Accommodation with lift pass included can be booked directly, you arrange your own travel there.

60 km of pistes 20 lifts Up to 3,250 m Austria

Hintertux is Austria's only ski resort with year-round skiing on a glacier. The resort lies at the head of the Tuxer Tal, a side valley off the Zillertal, and the Hintertuxer Gletscher offers skiing 365 days a year. This makes it unique throughout the Alps and a magnet for ski enthusiasts who simply can't wait for winter.

Glacier skiing stretches from 1,500 metres at the base station up to 3,250 metres at the Gefrorene Wand, giving an impressive vertical drop and ensured snow-covered pistes whatever the season. During the winter season, the glacier is supplemented by runs through the forested lower slopes, bringing the total to 60 km of pistes with plenty of variety.

Thanks to the extreme altitude and the glacier's natural snow production, Hintertux rarely needs to rely on snow cannons. Snow quality is often outstanding, with dry, easy-to-ski snow reminiscent of Scandinavian conditions. The long descents from the top of the glacier down into the valley make for one of the most memorable ski runs in the Alps.

Hintertux is not a large village and doesn't offer the same broad range of amenities as Mayrhofen further down the valley. But what's here is genuine and welcoming, with traditional hotels, good restaurants and a relaxed après-ski atmosphere. With the Zillertal Superskipass, you can easily combine glacier skiing with visits to the rest of the Zillertal's ski areas.

Did you know this about Hintertux?

Hintertux is Austria's only ski resort with skiing 365 days a year thanks to the Hintertuxer Gletscher, which makes it unique in the whole of the Alps and a gathering point for skiers long before the winter season has begun elsewhere.

5 tips about Hintertux

  1. Beginners at the mid-station The gentler pistes are found at the mid-station on the glacier, while the long descents down towards the valley are best suited to more experienced skiers.
  2. Combine with the Zillertal Superskipass With the Zillertal Superskipass you can alternate between glacier skiing in Hintertux and the larger ski areas further down the valley for more variety.
  3. Dress for the altitude The top of the glacier sits at 3,250 metres compared with the base at 1,500 metres, so pack plenty of warm layers even if it feels mild down in the village.
  4. Go outside the school holidays Since Hintertux can be skied all year round, the busiest times are the school holidays, so pick the weeks in between for better prices and quieter pistes.
  5. Try the year-round skiing Take the chance to ski outside the classic winter season too, as the glacier is open all year and offers an unusual opportunity to ski in the autumn sunshine, for example.

Pistes and lifts in Hintertux

The Hintertuxer Gletscher offers 60 km of pistes from 1,500 m up to 3,250 m, served by 21 lifts including a three-section gondola to the top of the glacier. The piste mix suits intermediate to advanced skiers best, with long red runs and challenging black sections. Beginners will find easier pistes at the mid-station. The glacier makes skiing possible all year round, with the best conditions during the winter season from November to May.

Snow reliability in Hintertux

Hintertux is considered extremely snow-sure thanks to the Hintertuxer Gletscher, which stretches from 1,500 metres at the base up to 3,250 metres at Gefrorene Wand. The considerable difference in altitude means that the snow cover on the upper slopes lasts throughout the winter season and indeed the rest of the year.

Thanks to the glacier's natural snow production, the resort rarely needs to top up with artificial snow, which often results in dry, high-quality snow on the pistes at the very top of the system.

Best time to travel to Hintertux

The winter season from November to April offers the best skiing, with all pistes open. The glacier is open all year round, but in summer and autumn skiing is limited to the highest sections. January and February bring the best snow quality across the whole system.

Will there be lift queues in Hintertux?

The lift system in Hintertux carries 41,857 people an hour across 20 lifts. 9 of the 20 lifts are gondolas or high-speed chairlifts and 7 are drag lifts, which take longer to get through when it is busy. The fastest lifts carry up to 3,200 people an hour, for example Gletscherbus 1. Per kilometre of piste there is more lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, and you notice it: queues clear quickly. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

When is Hintertux busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Hintertux in the 2026/2027 season.

  • Austria: The Semesterferien are taken one week at a time, state by state, during the first three weeks of February.
1 to 6 February: Vienna and Lower Austria
8 to 13 February: Burgenland and Carinthia
15 to 20 February: Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Styria and Vorarlberg
  • Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
    8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools
  • Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts
  • Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps

If you want quieter pistes and lower prices, the weeks in mid-January and late March are clearly the best. Neither the Germans nor the Austrians are on holiday then.

How to get to Hintertux

You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Hintertux, so you can pick the one that suits you.

By air. The nearest airport is Innsbruck (INN). Pure flying time from London is around 2 hours, and from there it is 1.5 hours on to Hintertux. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:

  • Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
  • Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.

By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 1,154 km to Hintertux, around 11.9 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.

Frequently asked questions about Hintertux

Hintertux is best suited to intermediate and advanced skiers. Beginners can use the easier sections at the mid-station, but the resort isn't ideal as a first destination. Families with mixed abilities are better off staying in Mayrhofen and visiting the glacier on a day trip.
