Saas-Fee is known as the "pearl of the Alps" and is a car-free ski resort sitting at 1,800 metres in the Saas Valley in Valais, surrounded by 13 peaks over 4,000 metres. The village is one of the highest-lying in Switzerland and offers glacier skiing up to 3,600 metres on the Allalin. A ski holiday in Saas-Fee suits those looking for snow-sure conditions, spectacular scenery and a genuine alpine atmosphere without traffic or stress.
The village has been car-free since 1951 and has preserved its authentic Walliser character, with traditional timber buildings and narrow streets. You park in the large car park at the entrance to the resort and get around on foot or by electric taxi. The atmosphere is calm and family-friendly, a world away from the party scene in resorts such as Verbier or Ischgl.
The ski area is divided into three sectors: Felskinn-Mittelallalin with glacier skiing, Spielboden-Langfluh for intermediate skiers, and Plattjen for more challenging terrain. The Allalin glacier delivers reliable snow from October to April, and in summer you can even ski on the glacier. Hidden inside the mountain is the Eispavillon, the world's largest ice grotto and a truly unique attraction.
Saas-Fee is an excellent alternative to neighbouring Zermatt if you want similarly snow-sure conditions and high mountains, but at somewhat lower prices and with a calmer, more family-friendly atmosphere. The resort also has lovely cross-country trails and walking paths for those who want to vary their ski holiday.

Snow reliability in Saas-Fee
Saas-Fee lies at an altitude of 1,800 metres with skiing up to 3,600 metres on the Allalin glacier, which gives the resort excellent conditions for reliable snow throughout the season. The glacier delivers reliable snow from October to April and even makes summer skiing possible.
With 100 km of pistes spread across three sectors, of which Felskinn-Mittelallalin is the highest, up among the glaciers, Saas-Fee is one of the most dependable options in the Alps for anyone who puts ensured snow above all else.
Best time to travel to Saas-Fee
The glacier opens as early as October. For the best all-round conditions, January to March is ideal. Spring skiing on the glacier is possible right into May. High season around Christmas and the winter holidays means higher prices. For sunny skiing, March is perfect, with long, sunlit days and still excellent snow at altitude.
Will there be lift queues in Saas-Fee?
The lift system in Saas-Fee carries 25,984 people an hour across 23 lifts. 8 of the 23 lifts are gondolas or high-speed chairlifts and 8 are drag lifts, which take longer to get through when it is busy. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,500 people an hour, for example Morenia. Per kilometre of piste there is less lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, so a busy week is felt more clearly here. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.
When is Saas-Fee busiest?
How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Saas-Fee in the 2026/2027 season.
- Switzerland: The Swiss Sportferien vary from canton to canton, and sometimes between municipalities in the same canton. They are spread from late January to early March, which makes the pressure more even than in the neighbouring countries.
-
Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools - Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts - Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps
Because the cantons spread their holidays out, the pressure is more even here than in the neighbouring countries. Mid-January and March are still the quietest weeks.
Opening and closing dates are typical values derived from altitude, not confirmed dates for this season. Check the resort's own website before booking.

How to get to Saas-Fee
You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Saas-Fee, so you can pick the one that suits you.
By air. The nearest airport is Geneva (GVA). Pure flying time from London is around 1,5 hours, and from there it is 3 hours on to Saas-Fee. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:
- Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives you to the car park at the entrance to Saas-Fee. Saas-Fee is car-free, so the last stretch is by electric taxi or on foot. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
- Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks. Saas-Fee is car-free: the car stays in the car park at the village entrance all week, and the last stretch is by electric taxi or on foot.
By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 920 km to Saas-Fee, around 10.2 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.
