St. Moritz in brief

155 km of pistes 23 lifts Up to 3,303 m Switzerland

St. Moritz is the cradle of ski tourism and one of the world's most glamorous winter destinations. Winter tourism was invented here in the 1860s, and the resort has since hosted two Winter Olympics (1928 and 1948). Sitting 1,822 metres above sea level in the Engadin valley in the canton of Graubünden, St. Moritz offers a unique combination of luxurious jet-set living and first-class skiing.

The ski area consists of two main sectors: Corviglia, just above the village, with 155 km of pistes rising to 3,057 metres (Piz Nair), and Corvatsch on the other side of the valley, offering glacier skiing and more challenging terrain. Together with the neighbouring areas in the Engadin region, the lift pass gives access to 350 km of pistes. Corviglia is the more popular of the two, with wide cruising runs and World Cup downhill courses, while Corvatsch tempts with altitude and reliable snow.

Away from the pistes, St. Moritz is renowned for its truly unusual winter events. Polo on the frozen St. Moritz lake, Cricket on Ice and the famous Cresta Run bobsleigh track are traditions that make this resort quite unlike anywhere else. The luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and exclusive boutiques make this a destination for anyone seeking the very best.

Prices are among the highest in the world, but St. Moritz makes up for it with over 300 days of sunshine a year and a dry, clear climate known as the "champagne climate". For anyone wanting to experience winter sport at the highest level, both on and off the piste, a ski holiday in St. Moritz is hard to beat.

Not the right resort? Try the compass

Did you know this about St. Moritz?

St. Moritz is regarded as the birthplace of ski tourism: modern winter tourism began here as early as the 1860s, when the first hotel tempted British guests to try an Alpine winter stay. The resort is also one of the few places in the world to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948.

5 tips about St. Moritz

  1. Best for beginners Corviglia above the village has wide, well-groomed pistes running down to 1,822 metres and is perfect for anyone who wants to cruise at a gentle pace with sweeping views over the Engadin valley.
  2. A challenge for the experienced Corvatsch, which reaches a full 3,303 metres, and Diavolezza/Lagalb offer glacier terrain and demanding off-piste for those who want to test their limits.
  3. Make the most of the area pass A lift pass for Engadin gives you access to a full 350 km of pistes in the region, so it pays to move between Corviglia, Corvatsch and the neighbouring resorts during your stay.
  4. Travel outside peak season St. Moritz is one of the more expensive ski resorts in the world, so travelling outside the half-term holidays and Christmas/New Year noticeably lowers accommodation prices without compromising on snow conditions.
  5. Try something unique Don't miss the distinctive winter experiences off the slopes, such as polo and cricket on the frozen lake or a ride down the legendary Cresta Run bob track.

Pistes and lifts in St. Moritz

Corviglia is the main mountain in St. Moritz, with broad, beautifully groomed pistes running from 3,057 metres right down to the village. The World Cup is held here regularly on the demanding Engiadina piste. Corvatsch, on the other side of the valley, reaches 3,303 metres and offers longer descents along with more off-piste terrain. The third area, Diavolezza/Lagalb, is a paradise for more advanced skiers, home to the famous glacier run from Diavolezza down to Morteratsch. Cross-country skiing in the Engadin valley is also world class, with over 200 km of trails.

Snow reliability in St. Moritz

St. Moritz sits at an altitude of 1,822 metres and the ski area stretches up to 3,303 metres at Corvatsch, giving a broad vertical range with dependable snow conditions well into the spring. The clear, dry climate of the region, often referred to as the champagne climate, helps keep piste conditions stable throughout the season.

With 155 km of groomed pistes and access to glacier terrain at Corvatsch and Diavolezza, St. Moritz is considered snow-sure, which makes it a safe choice for anyone wanting to book their ski holiday well in advance.

Best time to travel to St. Moritz

St. Moritz enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, so sunny weather is almost always. January and February bring the best snow conditions and the coldest temperatures. March is popular for sunny skiing, with mild days and still good snow at altitude. If you want to experience polo on ice or Cricket on Ice, plan your trip for January or February.

Will there be lift queues in St. Moritz?

The St. Moritz sector at St. Moritz carries 33,245 people an hour across 23 lifts. 15 of the 23 lifts are gondolas, cable cars or high-speed chairlifts, the kind that clear a queue quickly. The fastest lifts carry up to 3,000 people an hour, for example FIS (Corviglia–Plateau Nair). Per kilometre of piste there is less lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, so a busy week is felt more clearly here. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

When is St. Moritz busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill St. Moritz in the 2026/2027 season.

  • Switzerland: The Swiss Sportferien vary from canton to canton, and sometimes between municipalities in the same canton. They are spread from late January to early March, which makes the pressure more even than in the neighbouring countries.
  • Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
    8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools
  • Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts
  • Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps

Because the cantons spread their holidays out, the pressure is more even here than in the neighbouring countries. Mid-January and March are still the quietest weeks.

How to get to St. Moritz

You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to St. Moritz, so you can pick the one that suits you.

By air. The nearest airport is Zurich (ZRH). Pure flying time from London is around 1,5 hours, and from there it is 3 hours on to St. Moritz. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:

  • Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
  • Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.

By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 1,049 km to St. Moritz, around 11.2 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.
