Verbier is one of the world's most sought-after ski resorts and a mecca for freeride skiers from across the globe. The resort sits on a sunny terrace 1,500 metres above sea level in Valais and offers enormous variety in terrain, from wide pistes to steep couloirs and deep powder snow. A ski holiday in Verbier appeals to advanced skiers after an adrenaline rush, but also to those who want to enjoy a lively, international atmosphere.

The 4 Vallées ski area is one of Switzerland's largest, with 410 km of pistes and 82 lifts. From Mont Fort at 3,330 metres you have access to extremely steep terrain and glacier skiing, while the lower areas around Les Ruinettes and Savoleyres offer more relaxed skiing. The famous Xtreme Verbier competition, the finale of the Freeride World Tour, is held every year on the steep face of Mont Fort.

The village of Verbier has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a mix of luxurious chalets, gourmet restaurants and a lively nightlife. The après-ski culture is legendary, with venues such as Farinet and Pub Mont Fort drawing an international crowd. During peak season, the resort is a magnet for celebrities from around the world.

Prices are high even by Swiss standards, but those who choose to stay in one of the nearby villages such as Le Châble or Nendaz can save on accommodation. For advanced skiers, Verbier is one of the very best destinations in the Alps, with almost endless opportunities for off-piste and freeride skiing.

Did you know this about Verbier?

Verbier hosts the finale of the Freeride World Tour, Xtreme Verbier, which is decided each year on the steep face at Mont Fort and draws the world's finest off-piste skiers. The village has long been a gathering place for well-known faces and boasts one of the most legendary après-ski scenes in the Alps.

5 tips about Verbier

  1. Beginners at Les Esserts There's a separate area here with gentler terrain that's perfect for anyone taking their first turns on skis.
  2. Intermediates on Savoleyres Over on the other side of the valley, Savoleyres offers wide blue and red pistes at a more relaxed pace than Verbier's high-alpine sector.
  3. Freeriding at Mont Fort Advanced skiers should head up to 3,330 metres for steep terrain, couloirs and world-class glacier skiing.
  4. Save money in Le Châble Accommodation in Le Châble or Nendaz is often cheaper than in Verbier itself, while still giving you access to the entire 4 Vallees system.
  5. Avoid peak season Prices and crowds are at their highest over Christmas and the half-term holidays, so consider travelling in January or later in the spring season for quieter pistes.

Pistes and lifts in Verbier

The 4 Vallées network links Verbier with Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz across 410 km of prepared pistes. Verbier's own sector is dominated by the high area around Mont Fort and Mont Gelé, where steep black runs and ungroomed freeride terrain attract advanced skiers. Savoleyres, on the other side of the valley, is calmer, with wide blue and red runs that are perfect for intermediates. Beginners have their own area at Les Esserts.

Snow reliability in Verbier

Verbier sits at an altitude of 1,500 metres, with skiing up to 3,330 metres at Mont Fort, giving access to high-alpine terrain and glacier snow well into the spring. The considerable vertical range means the ski season is dependable and snow conditions stay good even when it's mild down in the village.

With 215 km of groomed pistes within Verbier's own sector, and a good many more across the whole 4 Vallees system, there are plenty of options at different altitudes should the snow situation vary between the lower and higher parts of the area.

Best time to travel to Verbier

January to March offers the best snow conditions and the most powder days. For freeride, February and March are ideal, as the snowpack is at its best then. March and April bring sunnier days and spring skiing at altitude. Avoid the Christmas and New Year weeks if you want to steer clear of crowds and peak prices.

Will there be lift queues in Verbier?

Verbier is part of 4 Vallées, and the lift system there carries 91,854 people an hour across 68 lifts. 34 of the 68 lifts are gondolas or high-speed chairlifts and 8 are drag lifts, which take longer to get through when it is busy. The fastest lifts carry up to 3,200 people an hour, for example Barnes Line. That is roughly the same capacity per kilometre of piste as an average resort on this site, so queues only build when it is really busy. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

When is Verbier busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Verbier in the 2026/2027 season.

  • Switzerland: The Swiss Sportferien vary from canton to canton, and sometimes between municipalities in the same canton. They are spread from late January to early March, which makes the pressure more even than in the neighbouring countries.
  • Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
    8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools
  • Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts
  • Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps

Because the cantons spread their holidays out, the pressure is more even here than in the neighbouring countries. Mid-January and March are still the quietest weeks.

How to get to Verbier

You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Verbier, so you can pick the one that suits you.

By air. The nearest airport is Geneva (GVA). Pure flying time from London is around 1,5 hours, and from there it is 2 hours on to Verbier. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:

  • Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
  • Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.

By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 855 km to Verbier, around 9.4 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.

Frequently asked questions about Verbier

No, although Verbier is best known for freeride and steep pistes, there's plenty of room for blue and red runs, particularly in the Savoleyres area and elsewhere in the 4 Vallées. The Les Esserts beginner area has gentle slopes and a good ski school. That said, the main draw is definitely the challenging terrain.

The Freeride World Tour is the world's biggest freeride competition series for skiing and snowboarding. The final, Xtreme Verbier, is held every year on the steep face of Mont Fort above the village. It's free to watch, and thousands of spectators gather to see the world's best freeride skiers.

From Verbier, you take the lifts via Les Attelas and Mont Fort to reach the other valleys. A 4 Vallées pass gives access to all 410 km of pistes. Exploring the whole network can take up most of a day, so many visitors choose to focus on one or two sectors per day.

Yes. Villages such as Le Châble and Nendaz are close to the ski area and often offer lower accommodation prices. From Le Châble, you take the gondola up to Verbier, and you'll still have access to the whole 4 Vallées with the right lift pass.
