How to ski in Kitzbühel

Beginners and families will find their slopes close to the village at 762 metres and at Resterhöhe, where the terrain is open and gentle. The blue pistes, which make up 40 per cent of the ski area, are often located right by these starting points, making it easy to get going without having to cross more difficult terrain.

The more demanding sections are higher up towards Hahnenkamm, where the gradient steepens and the map shows several red and black runs. This is home to the legendary Streif course, a steep and technically demanding descent that is clearly marked. Red pistes account for 35 per cent of the network and black runs for 10 per cent, concentrated on these upper flanks.

The ski area is divided into sectors around Hahnenkamm and Kirchberg, connected by long linking pistes and 57 lifts in total. It is possible to ski between the sectors in a single day, but the distances involved mean you need to plan carefully to cover the whole 188 kilometres of pistes before the lifts close.

The vertical drop between village and summit, from 762 to 2 000 metres, means snow quality varies; higher up the snow more often stays fresh well into the day, while the pistes closest to the village can become heavy in the afternoon sun. The linking pistes between the sectors tend to get busy around lunchtime, so an early start pays off.
