How to ski in La Clusaz
Skiing in La Clusaz starts from the village at 1 040 metres, where the gentle beginner slopes lie right on the edge of the buildings. Families and beginners can reach them without taking a lift, and the blue terrain, around 35 per cent of the piste map, is spread across several pockets around the valley station, making it easy to practise without crossing faster traffic.
The higher up the ski area you go, the more demanding the terrain becomes. The red pistes, roughly 30 per cent of the map, are mainly found at the mid-altitudes, while the black sections, 15 per cent, are concentrated on the steeper flanks below the summits at 2 616 metres, where the vertical drop down to the village is clearly felt.
The 47 lifts link the various sectors together so that you can move through large parts of the ski area without repeating the same run. In a single day, anyone keen to explore can cover several parts of the area's 125 kilometres of pistes, but the distances involved mean it pays to plan your route if you want to reach the far sectors and get back to the village the same day.
A practical tip: the lower pistes near the village often have softer snow and can build up queues around lunchtime, while the higher sectors towards 2 616 metres hold better snow quality later into the season. Head up there in the middle of the day if you want to avoid the crowds.
