How to ski in Les Arcs

Les Arcs is built around several altitude levels, from Arc 1600 and further up towards Arc 2000, and that structure is clearly visible on the piste map. Beginners and families stick to the lower section near the village, where the terrain is more open and easy to take in without having to cross harder pistes to get there. Arc 1600 works as a natural base for anyone wanting to stay on gentler terrain for the first few days.

The higher you go towards Aiguille Rouge at 3 226 metres, the more red and black dominate. The share of black pistes, around 20 per cent of the system, is mainly found on these upper flanks, while the red runs (40 per cent) tie the mid-altitudes together and lead gradually up towards the steeper sections higher up.

The system links up in such a way that you can move between the different altitude levels without having to drop down to the village in between, and with 54 lifts and 200 km of pistes, a single day is rarely enough to cover it all. Via the Vanoise Express, Les Arcs is connected to La Plagne to form the whole of Paradiski, a total of 425 km, which opens up the option of a longer day trip in that direction.

The vertical drop between village and summit, 1 600 to 3 226 metres, means snow quality can vary a great deal depending on where in the system you are, so planning around altitude matters more than planning around the time of day.
