How to ski in Mayrhofen

Families and beginners will find their feet on Ahorn, the sunny south-facing side above the village, reached by gondola directly from Mayrhofen. Wide, gentle pistes dominate here and the terrain never feels intimidating, which makes the sector a natural gathering point for anyone who has just started out or is skiing with children.

The more demanding skiing is found on the Penken side, where black pistes make up 15 per cent of the ski area and the runs become considerably steeper the higher you climb towards 2 500 metres. With 35 per cent red and just as much blue in the network, however, there is plenty of intermediate terrain to move between before you take on the toughest flanks.

Ahorn and Penken are not directly connected within the piste network, but are linked by lifts and pistes running down to the village at 630 metres, which means a circuit often goes via Mayrhofen. With 142 kilometres of piste served by 57 lifts, there is more than enough for a full day's skiing, and anyone wanting to venture further can make use of the Zillertal Superskipass, which opens up a full 546 kilometres of piste in the region.

The vertical drop of 1 870 metres between the village and the summit means that the morning snow high up can differ considerably from conditions down at 630 metres. Ahorn's sunny side often turns heavy later in the day, while shadier sections on Penken hold their snow quality further into the afternoon.
