The map reveals wide pistes above the tree line that are perfect for cruising in the sunshine, while the lower sections offer sheltered tree skiing. How to ski in Nassfeld
Nassfeld in Carinthia builds its lift system around the village at 600 metres, and this is also where beginners and families will find most of the blue runs that make up 40 per cent of the piste map. The lifts from the village slope take you straight up into open, easy sections where the gradient is gentle and the views over the valley give you a good sense of how the system fits together.
The more demanding terrain lies higher up, towards the summit at 2 020 metres, where the reds at 25 per cent and the blacks at 10 per cent call for a more solid technique. Here the flanks steepen and the piste map clearly shows how the terrain narrows the higher you climb.
With 29 lifts and a total of 110 kilometres of piste, it is possible to cover large parts of Nassfeld in a single day, provided you plan your route using the map in advance. The system is well connected enough that you can get around without skiing the same piste twice, but the vertical drop between village and summit, around 1 400 metres, means you should allow time for longer lift rides between the different sectors.
A practical tip: head for the higher parts of the system early in the day before the sun softens the snow too much, then work your way back down towards the village slopes after lunch, once the lower pistes have had more sun and the queues at the lower lifts have died down.
