The piste map of Obertauern shows the unique circular ski system "Tauernrunde", with 100 km of pistes encircling the whole village. The map illustrates how the 26 modern lifts form a natural loop that you can ski either clockwise or anticlockwise, a rare feature among Alpine resorts. The village, at 1 740 metres, sits in the middle of the map, surrounded by pistes facing every direction. Gamsleiten 2, one of Austria's steepest runs with a 100% gradient, is clearly visible in the southern part of the map. The beginner areas at Schaidberg are marked in the western sector.

How to ski in Obertauern

Obertauern sits at 1 740 metres, which means the whole ski area usually enjoys reliable snow cover throughout the season. Beginners and families will find their slopes at Schaidberg in the western sector, an area with gentle gradients and a close connection to the village, so there is no need for long transfers before getting the day started.

The most demanding terrain lies in the southern part of the map, where Gamsleiten 2 stands out with a gradient of 100 per cent, one of the steepest pistes in Austria. Anyone looking for a challenge should head this way, while the gentler sections round about offer alternatives when the legs need a rest.

What makes Obertauern special is the so-called Tauernrunde, a circular loop that links the ski area's 100 kilometres of pistes and 26 lifts all the way around the village. You can ski the full circuit, either clockwise or anticlockwise, without having to retrace your steps. That makes it possible to work your way through several aspects and types of terrain in a single day without interruption.

Because the village lies at the centre of the ski area with pistes surrounding it on every side, the light and snow conditions change depending on which part of the ring you happen to be on during the day. It is therefore worth planning your route so that you make the most of the shape of the loop, rather than shuttling back and forth to the same lift.
