How to ski in Samoëns

Beginners and families will find their runs close to the valley station in Samoëns, at 740 metres, where the terrain is gentle and easy to read before heading higher up into the ski area. From here it is simple to move on by lift without having to cross any steeper sections, which makes the area near the village a reassuring base for anyone who has only just clicked into their skis.

The more demanding terrain lies higher up in the Grand Massif, where the piste map shows a considerable share of red runs and steeper black flanks towards the highest points of the ski area at around 2 500 metres. More experience is needed here, and it is in these parts that the vertical drop down to the village is most noticeable.

Samoëns' own 140 kilometres of pistes connect with the neighbouring resorts in the Grand Massif, which together offer 265 kilometres of pistes and 64 lifts. This makes it perfectly possible to ski between several villages in a single day, but the distances involved mean you should plan your route if you want to get back to Samoëns before the lifts close.

A practical tip is to make the most of the runs near the village in the morning before the sun softens the snow higher up, and save the upper sections towards 2 500 metres for later in the day, when the snow quality there is often at its best. Around lunchtime the lifts closest to the village tend to be at their busiest, so an early start pays off.
