68 km of pistes 16 lifts Up to 2,033 m Austria

Dorfgastein greets you the moment you enter the Gastein valley, as the first village along the way, and you can tell. The pace is slower here, the streets less busy and the feel more village-like than in the neighbouring resorts further up towards Bad Gastein. At 830 metres the village clusters around the church and the old timber houses, with the mountain rising behind.

It is a resort that suits families and anyone wanting to combine skiing with peace and quiet. Child-friendly slopes near the village, short distances between accommodation and lifts, and an atmosphere where you recognise faces in the ski shop and the café after a day on the slopes. No stress, no queues that feel endless.

What makes Dorfgastein especially interesting is how the ski area links over the mountain with Grossarltal on the other side, a connection that lets you ski between two valleys without taking your skis off. The area is part of Ski amadé, giving access to a much bigger network without the village itself losing its small-scale character. The top reaches 2,033 metres, where the view opens up across the whole valley.

Skiing in Dorfgastein

Did you know this about Dorfgastein?

Dorfgastein is the first village you come to in the Gastein valley and has long been a quieter counterpart to the spa town of Bad Gastein further up the valley, which has drawn visitors to its hot springs since the 19th century. The ski area is linked to Grossarltal by a lift over the mountain, so you can ski between two valleys, and forms part of Ski amadé, one of the largest connected ski areas in the Alps.

5 tips about Dorfgastein

  1. Perfect for beginners With 31 km of blue pistes out of a total of 68 km, Dorfgastein is a rewarding choice for families and for anyone who has only just started skiing.
  2. Use the Skischaukel Take the chance to ski over to Grossarltal via the link between the valleys. It adds variety without you having to change skis or ski area.
  3. Head high in mild weather The village sits at just 830 metres while the top reaches 2,033 metres, so on milder days it is worth taking the lifts higher up for better snow.
  4. Travel outside the peak weeks Book weeks outside half-term and Christmas for better prices on your stay. The slopes are the same, but the pressure in the lift queues is considerably lower.
  5. Treat yourself to a coffee stop After a day on the slopes it is classic Austrian to sit down with a Kaiserschmarrn or a warm cup of Glühwein at one of the mountain restaurants.

Pistes and lifts in Dorfgastein

The Skischaukel Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area comprises a total of 68 km of pistes, split into 31 km of blue, 35 km of red and 2 km of black runs, reached by 16 lifts between 830 and 2,033 metres. The large share of easy and intermediate slopes makes the area perfect for families and skiers who want to cruise around without chasing steep challenges, while the few black sections add a little spice for anyone wanting to try something steeper. From the village a gondola takes you up towards Fulseck, and from there chairlifts link the runs across towards Grossarltal. Après-ski is relaxed and village-like, nothing like a party hotspot.

Snow reliability in Dorfgastein

Dorfgastein sits at 830 metres, while the ski area climbs to 2,033 metres, an altitude difference that makes a big difference to snow conditions through the season. Winter temperatures in the valley are around -4 to -6 degrees at night in December and January, which gives good conditions for snowmaking and stable snow in the upper parts of the area.

Towards spring, daytime temperatures rise noticeably, to around 10 degrees in March and 13 degrees in April, which can affect the snow in the lower sections near the village. Anyone wanting to be sure of good snow should therefore expect to move higher up the system in the final part of the season.

Best time to travel to Dorfgastein

With night-time temperatures of around minus four to minus six degrees in December and January, conditions for snow are good in the peak season, while February and March bring rising daytime temperatures and more comfortable skiing weather.

Anyone wanting a good balance between cold for snow quality and milder days should look at January to March, while April suits those who put sunshine and a spring feel ahead of cold.

Will there be lift queues in Dorfgastein?

The lift system around Dorfgastein carries 28,212 people an hour across 16 lifts. 10 of the 16 lifts are gondolas, cable cars or high-speed chairlifts, the kind that clear a queue quickly. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,900 people an hour, for example Kreuzkogel. That is roughly the same capacity per kilometre of piste as an average resort on this site, so queues only build when it is really busy. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

When is Dorfgastein busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Dorfgastein in the 2026/2027 season.

  • Austria: The Semesterferien are taken one week at a time, state by state, during the first three weeks of February.
1 to 6 February: Vienna and Lower Austria
8 to 13 February: Burgenland and Carinthia
15 to 20 February: Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Styria and Vorarlberg
  • Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
    8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools
  • Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts
  • Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps

If you want quieter pistes and lower prices, the weeks in mid-January and late March are clearly the best. Neither the Germans nor the Austrians are on holiday then.

How to get to Dorfgastein

You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Dorfgastein, so you can pick the one that suits you.

By air. The nearest airport is Salzburg (SZG). Pure flying time from London is around 2 hours, and from there it is 1 hour on to Dorfgastein. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:

  • Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
  • Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.

By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 1,189 km to Dorfgastein, around 12 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.
