How to ski in Dorfgastein

Beginners and families will find their runs right above the village at 830 metres, where the blue pistes are easily accessible with lifts starting close to Dorfgastein. With 46 per cent of the 68 kilometres marked blue, there is plenty of room to build confidence without having to cross trickier sections, and it is easy to get back down to the village the same way you came up.

The more demanding terrain lies higher up towards Fulseck's summit at 2 033 metres, where the red pistes dominate with 51 per cent of the network. Here you get steeper flanks and longer turn radii to suit skiers with solid technique. There are few black sections, just 2 kilometres of the total, so the really tough terrain is limited rather than an area in its own right to plan your day around.

What makes Dorfgastein special is the ski link joining the Fulseck side with Großarltal on the other side of the mountain. That connection means you can plan a circuit that takes you away from your home area and back again, rather than simply riding up and down the same lifts. With 16 lifts tying together the 68 kilometres, a single day is plenty to explore your own side and hop across to the neighbouring valley.

The vertical drop between the village and the summit is around 1 200 metres, and you notice it in the snow quality. The higher slopes towards Fulseck stay colder later into the season, while the pistes closest to the village can become heavy later in the day. It is worth planning the trip over to Großarltal early if the lower slopes tend to get busier around midday.
