Engelberg is Central Switzerland's largest and highest ski area, dominated by the mighty Titlis mountain, which rises to 3,238 metres. The resort sits in a broad valley at 1,000 metres and has a character all of its own, combining a traditional Swiss mountain village with a historic Benedictine monastery founded in 1120. A ski holiday in Engelberg offers a surprisingly large vertical drop of over 2,000 metres and glacier skiing on Titlis.

You reach Titlis via the spectacular rotating cable car, Titlis Rotair, the world's first rotating gondola. From the summit, you get a breathtaking view over the Alps and access to glacier pistes that ensure snow from October to May. The famous descent from Titlis down to Stand is one of the most impressive in the Alps, with steep glacier terrain.

For families and beginners, the Brunni area on the other side of the valley offers gentle runs and fantastic views towards Titlis. The village also has a charming high street with restaurants, bakeries and traditional Swiss shops. Après-ski is calm and relaxed, more focused on cosy restaurants than on a party atmosphere.

Engelberg is easily accessible from Luzern, just 45 minutes by train, making it popular for day trips and short ski breaks. Prices are high, though somewhat lower than in the major Valais resorts, and the proximity to Luzern makes it possible to combine city visits with skiing.

2. Make the most of the vertical With over 2,000 metres of vertical between the valley at 1,000 metres and the summit at 3,238 metres, be sure to plan at least one descent all the way from Titlis down to Engelberg.
3. Year-round glacier skiing The runs on Titlis sit at glacier altitude and hold their snow well into the spring, which makes Engelberg a good choice both early and late in the season.
4. Combine it with Luzern The train to Luzern takes just 45 minutes, so treat yourself to a day in the city for shopping or sightseeing between ski days.
5. Low-key après-ski Expect cosy restaurants and bakeries rather than a buzzing party scene, which suits anyone who wants to wind down after a day on the slopes.

Pistes and lifts in Engelberg

The 82 km of pistes are split across two areas. The Titlis side is the main attraction, with high-altitude glacier pistes and an impressive vertical drop of over 2,000 metres. The descent from Titlis via Stand and Trübsee down to Engelberg is demanding and long. Brunni, on the other side of the valley, is a family-friendly area with gentle blue and red runs in a sunny setting. The off-piste opportunities around Titlis are excellent for experienced skiers, not least the famous Laub area.

Snow reliability in Engelberg

Engelberg is considered snow-sure thanks to the ski area's substantial vertical range, from the village at 1,000 metres up to the summit of Titlis at 3,238 metres. The high-altitude glacier pistes on Titlis mean the snow cover stays in good condition for much of the season, right through to late spring.

With a total of 82 km of pistes and 25 lifts spread across both the high Titlis area and the lower Brunni area, there is every chance of finding good skiing whatever the weather, from steep glacier descents to more approachable runs further down the valley.

Best time to travel to Engelberg

The glacier pistes on Titlis often open as early as October. For the best all-round conditions, January to March is ideal. Spring skiing on the glacier is possible right through to May. The Brunni area is most tempting in March, when the sun warms things up but the snow is still in good condition.

Will there be lift queues in Engelberg?

Engelberg is part of Titlis, and the lift system there carries 23,411 people an hour across 18 lifts. 12 of the 18 lifts are gondolas, cable cars or high-speed chairlifts, the kind that clear a queue quickly. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,800 people an hour, for example Jochstock Xpress. Per kilometre of piste there is less lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, so a busy week is felt more clearly here. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

When is Engelberg busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Engelberg in the 2026/2027 season.

• Switzerland: The Swiss Sportferien vary from canton to canton, and sometimes between municipalities in the same canton. They are spread from late January to early March, which makes the pressure more even than in the neighbouring countries.
• Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
  1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
  8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
  8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
• England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.

Because the cantons spread their holidays out, the pressure is more even here than in the neighbouring countries. Mid-January and March are still the quietest weeks.
