110 km of pistes 23 lifts Up to 2,400 m Switzerland

Wengen is a car-free Swiss ski destination set on a sunny terrace 1,274 metres above sea level in the Bernese Oberland, with views over the Lauterbrunnen valley and the three famous peaks Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The resort forms part of the Jungfrau region and shares its ski area with neighbouring Grindelwald. A ski holiday in Wengen offers a truly special combination of classic Alpine charm, car-free calm and world-renowned skiing.

Wengen is best known for the Lauberhorn downhill, one of the World Cup's most traditional and longest race courses. Every January, thousands of spectators gather to watch the world's best downhill skiers race down the 4.5 km course. If you're there for the Lauberhorn weekend, you'll experience one of winter sport's greatest occasions.

The car-free village can only be reached by the Wengernalpbahn cog railway from Lauterbrunnen, which gives an immediate sense of calm and exclusivity. Traditional wooden hotels, cosy restaurants and small shops line the main street. Après-ski here is discreet and relaxed. You won't find a party scene, but rather a fondue by the fireplace.

The ski area is shared with Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg, and with the Jungfrau region ski pass you have access to a full 213 km of pistes. Wengen's own runs are varied, ranging from wide beginner slopes to the challenging Lauberhorn run. The views of the Eiger's north face from the pistes are among the most dramatic in the entire Alps.

Did you know this about Wengen?

Wengen is famous for the Lauberhorn downhill, the longest and most classic downhill course on the World Cup circuit at a full 4.5 km, drawing thousands of spectators every January. The village is entirely car-free and can only be reached by the Wengernalpbahn rack railway from Lauterbrunnen, which has earned it a reputation for peace and quiet and genuine Alpine charm.

5 tips about Wengen

  1. Beginners at Männlichen The wide, open blue runs around Männlichen at 2,343 m are perfect for beginners and families, with sweeping views thrown in for good measure.
  2. Make the most of the regional pass The Jungfrau region lift pass gives you access to a full 213 km of pistes, including Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg, so do try a different ski area during your stay.
  3. Stay high for the best snow Head for the runs around Kleine Scheidegg (2,061 m) and Männlichen when it turns mild down in the village at 1,274 m, as the snow lasts longer up there.
  4. Travel outside the Lauberhorn weekend Prices climb steeply during the Lauberhorn races in January, so book a week either side instead for quieter pistes and better value.
  5. Take the train up for lunch The Wengernalpbahn whisks you between the village and the ski area, ideal for a fondue or another Alpine lunch with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Pistes and lifts in Wengen

Wengen's pistes stretch from the village at 1,274 metres up to Lauberhorn and onwards to Kleine Scheidegg at 2,061 metres. From here you can continue to Männlichen (2,343 m) and across to Grindelwald. The Lauberhorn run is the great draw for advanced skiers. For families, there are excellent blue runs around Männlichen with wide, open terrain and fantastic views. The area around Kleine Scheidegg offers varied red runs with the Eiger's north face as a dramatic backdrop.

Snow reliability in Wengen

Wengen sits on a sunny terrace at 1,274 m, while the skiing reaches up to 2,400 m via Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen. That considerable difference in altitude means snow conditions are often good in the upper reaches of the area even when it is milder down in the village.

The resort is considered snow-sure, and combined with the northerly aspect towards the Eiger north face, this helps keep the snow in good shape well into the season.

Best time to travel to Wengen

The Lauberhorn weekend in January is a highlight for sports enthusiasts. For quieter skiing, January outside the race week or March is ideal. Spring skiing in April is possible in the higher sections. Snow conditions are generally good from December to April thanks to the north-facing location.

Will there be lift queues in Wengen?

Wengen is car-free and the whole village heads up at the same time. There are only two ways up: the cable car to Männlichen, which carries 860 people an hour, and the cog railway towards Kleine Scheidegg, which carries 1,350 and runs every half hour. That is where the queue forms, between eight and half past nine. If you are up before eight you avoid it completely. Once you are in the system the crowds are behind you: the Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen sector alone has 23 lifts carrying just under 31,000 people an hour between them, so queues stay short even in a full half-term week.

When is Wengen busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the local families and the neighbouring countries are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Wengen in the 2026/2027 season.

  • Switzerland: The Swiss Sportferien vary from canton to canton, and sometimes between municipalities in the same canton. They are spread from late January to early March, which makes the pressure more even than in the neighbouring countries.
  • Germany: Germans are the largest foreign group in the Alps and their winter holidays are spread across early February.
1 to 6 February: Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
8 to 12 February: Bavaria and Saarland
    8 to 19 February: Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
8 to 12 February: half term in a few council areas, for example Hull
15 to 19 February: half term in most of England, including London, the Midlands and the North
26 March to 9 April: Easter holidays for most English schools
  • Easter holidays: Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March. Austria and Germany take their holidays around the weekend, while the French holidays fall after Easter, in April.
20 to 29 March: the whole of Austria, all states at the same time
22 March to 3 April: most German states, including Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia
3 April to 3 May: the French zones, which fall after Easter 2027 and only affect the highest resorts
  • Long weekends: Long weekends fill the slopes with day visitors from the nearest cities, even when no schools are on holiday.
26 December to 3 January: Christmas and New Year, the most expensive period of the year
6 January: Epiphany, a public holiday in Austria, Italy and parts of Switzerland
27 to 29 March: the Easter weekend. Easter Monday is a public holiday across the Alps, but Good Friday is a working day in Austria, Italy and France
1 to 2 May: May Day, a public holiday across the Alps

Because the cantons spread their holidays out, the pressure is more even here than in the neighbouring countries. Mid-January and March are still the quietest weeks.

How to get to Wengen

You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Wengen, so you can pick the one that suits you.

By air. The nearest airport is Zurich (ZRH). Pure flying time from London is around 1,5 hours, and from there it is 2.5 hours on to Wengen. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:

  • Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives you to Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is car-free, so the last stretch is by cog railway up to the village. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
  • Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks. Wengen is car-free: the car stays in the car park in Lauterbrunnen all week, and the last stretch is by cog railway up to the village.

By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 938 km to Wengen, around 11.8 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.

Yes, the famous Lauberhorn downhill is open to everyone as a red run. It is 4.5 km long with a vertical drop of 1,028 metres. The passage through the 'Hundschopf', a narrow gap between rocks, is particularly thrilling. You won't reach race speeds, of course, but the experience is fantastic.
