Val di Fiemme is a broad, sunny valley in Trentino best known as one of the world's leading destinations for cross-country skiing. The valley regularly hosts the Nordic World Championships and the Tour de Ski, boasting a world-class trail network. But Val di Fiemme also offers excellent alpine skiing, particularly for families and those seeking a relaxed, genuinely Italian valley experience.
The two main alpine areas are Alpe Cermis above Cavalese and Ski Center Latemar near Predazzo-Pampeago. Together they offer around 110 kilometres of pistes across a range of difficulty levels. The Dolomiti Superski pass gives access to the entire vast network for those wanting to explore further afield.
The valley's charm lies in its authentic character. The villages of Cavalese, Predazzo and Tesero are lively local communities with markets, historic churches and restaurants serving traditional Trentino food with pride. Tourism doesn't dominate here, rather it's genuine Italian life, giving visitors a real cultural experience.
For families, Val di Fiemme is one of the best choices in the Dolomites. Prices are low, the pistes are family-friendly, and there are plenty of activities beyond alpine skiing, including cross-country skiing, ice skating and visits to the local spa facilities.

5 tips about Val di Fiemme
- Best for families Ski Center Latemar at Predazzo-Pampeago has calmer, open pistes that suit beginners and children, while Alpe Cermis offers slightly more varied terrain when the family fancies a challenge.
- Make the most of the big pass With a Dolomiti Superski pass you can switch easily between Val di Fiemme's 50 km of pistes and the neighbouring areas, giving you considerably more skiing for the same lift pass.
- Stay high up As the village sits at just 1,000 metres while the peaks reach 2,250 metres, it is wise to spend the day skiing in the higher parts of the system for the best conditions.
- Travel outside the holidays Prices for accommodation with a lift pass are considerably lower if you avoid the Italian and international half-term holidays, which makes the valley a good-value option in low season.
- Try the cross-country trails With over 150 km of world-class groomed cross-country trails, it is worth devoting a day or two to classic or skate skiing in the very valley that hosts the Tour de Ski.
Pistes and lifts in Val di Fiemme

Snow reliability in Val di Fiemme
Val di Fiemme is not classed as a snow-sure area, which is partly explained by the fact that the village lies relatively low, at around 1,000 metres. The snow cover here can be vulnerable during mild spells, particularly at the start and end of the season.
The alpine pistes do, however, reach up to 2,250 metres, which means far more reliable conditions higher up in the system. Anyone wanting to maximise snow quality should therefore prioritise skiing in the upper sections of Alpe Cermis and Ski Center Latemar.
Best time to travel to Val di Fiemme
The best time for skiing in Val di Fiemme is from January to mid-March. January brings the quietest slopes and the best prices. February is high season, coinciding with half-term holidays and a fuller programme of activities. For cross-country skiers, the period around the Tour de Ski (New Year to early January) is a special experience, when the world's best cross-country skiers race through the valley.
Will there be lift queues in Val di Fiemme?
The Alpe Cermis sector at Val di Fiemme carries 13,300 people an hour across 7 lifts. 6 of the 7 lifts are gondolas, cable cars or high-speed chairlifts, the kind that clear a queue quickly. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,400 people an hour, for example Doss dei Laresi-Cermis. Per kilometre of piste there is less lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, so a busy week is felt more clearly here. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.

How to get to Val di Fiemme
You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Val di Fiemme, so you can pick the one that suits you.
By air. The nearest airport is Innsbruck (INN). Pure flying time from London is around 2 hours, and from there it is 2 hours on to Val di Fiemme. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:
- Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
- Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.
By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 1,218 km to Val di Fiemme, around 13.3 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.
