How to ski in Adelboden

Beginners and families will find their terrain near the valley stations in Adelboden, where the open, lower parts of the area sit close to the village at 1 353 metres. From here it is easy to get straight out on your skis without long transfers, and the blue pistes, which make up 35 per cent of the map, give plenty of room to practise without crossing faster traffic coming down from above.

The higher you move up through the system, the steeper it gets. The red pistes, 25 per cent of the total, and the black sections at 15 per cent lie in the upper terrain towards the peaks that reach 2 362 metres. Solid technique is needed here to handle both the gradient and the terrain that opens up above the tree line.

Adelboden's 72 kilometres of piste are divided into sectors that are linked together higher up in the system, so you can move around between different parts of the ski area during the day without having to return to the village all the time. Anyone wanting to extend their range further can head on into the linked system towards Lenk, which together with Adelboden makes up a full 210 kilometres of piste.

The vertical drop between the village and the highest point is 1 009 metres, which is clearly noticeable in the snow conditions through the day. The higher sectors towards the peaks often hold up better during milder spells, while the pistes closest to the village are the ones that feel changes in temperature first. If you plan your day accordingly, you can often find better snow quality higher up even when it is soft at the valley station.
