How to ski in Champoluc
Beginners and families in Champoluc will find their terrain gathered around the village at 1 570 metres and in the lower parts of the Crest sector, which sits directly above the buildings. There are 29 kilometres of blue pistes here, equivalent to 22 per cent of the whole system, and they are easily reached on the lifts starting near the village without having to cross any more demanding sections.
The more demanding terrain lies higher up in the system, closer to the passes towards the neighbouring areas. The 14 kilometres of black pistes, around 11 per cent of the total piste length, are found on the steeper flanks up at Colle Sarezza and on the sections leading towards Gressoney and Alagna. Elsewhere the red pistes dominate, 89 kilometres of them, forming the backbone of the whole of Monterosa Ski.
Champoluc is the westernmost valley in Monterosa Ski, and the Crest sector above the village acts as the hub for linking on towards the other valleys. With 132 kilometres of piste and 21 lifts you can cover a lot of ground in a day, but anyone wanting to tour the entire system and reach Gressoney and Alagna should expect most of the day to be spent travelling rather than skiing runs.
The vertical drop between the village and the highest point at 3 275 metres is a full 1 705 metres, which means snow conditions vary considerably between the base and the top. If you want the best possible surface, stick to the higher sections near the passes, as the pistes closest to the village are the first to suffer once the temperature rises.
