1. Beginners and families With 29 km of blue pistes in the system there is plenty of room for gentle, wide practice runs before you take on the red descents that dominate the area.
2. Make the most of Monterosa Ski The lift pass is valid across the whole system linking Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna. Take a full day and ski between all three villages in a single loop.
3. Head high for better snow With peaks up to 3,275 metres, the snow stays noticeably colder and drier high up in the system, even when it is milder down in the village at 1,570 metres.
4. Travel outside peak season Champoluc is less well known than the big French resorts. Book outside the February half-term weeks and you get both lower prices and fewer people on the pistes.
5. Take a long Walser lunch The character of the village invites long breaks. Treat yourself to a proper, unhurried lunch between sessions, just as the locals do.

Monterosa Ski around Champoluc comprises 132 km of pistes and 21 lifts, split into 29 km of blue, 89 km of red and 14 km of black runs, at altitudes between 1,570 and 3,275 metres. Snow reliability in Champoluc

Champoluc sits at 1,570 metres, while the ski system climbs all the way to 3,275 metres, giving a wide altitude range to move around in through the season. At night, temperatures stay reliably below freezing from December to March (between -4 and -7 degrees), which helps the snow even as the days turn milder.

April brings daytime temperatures of around 7 degrees and nights of around -2, a sign that the season is shifting into spring skiing. Anyone wanting the most reliable conditions should stick to the upper parts of the system, up towards 3,275 metres, where the cold holds on longest.

Best time to travel to Champoluc

With night-time temperatures down to minus seven degrees in January and daytime highs rising to around plus five in February and March, the peak season for snow-sure skiing runs from January to March.

Will there be lift queues in Champoluc?

The lift system around Champoluc carries 35,084 people an hour across 21 lifts. 11 of the 21 lifts belong to the faster class. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,800 people an hour, for example Crest-Alpe Ostafa III. Per kilometre of piste there is less lift capacity than at an average resort on this site, so a busy week is felt more clearly here. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before nine you avoid it.

When is Champoluc busiest?

How busy the slopes get is not decided by the English half term but by when the Italians are on holiday. These are the weeks that fill Champoluc in the 2026/2027 season.

• Italy: Italy has no national ski holiday. Instead it is Carnevale that fills the resorts, when Italians take their settimana bianca.
  24 January to 9 February: Carnevale, with carnival Sunday on 7 February and Shrove Tuesday on the 9th
• England: The English February half term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most councils, with a few areas breaking up a week earlier. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 9 April.
