Most of the beginner terrain is gathered around the base station and in the open nursery slopes above the village, while the main red runs stretch on towards Sportinia and link up with Sestriere's network. How to ski in Sauze d'Oulx

Sauze d'Oulx lies in the western part of Via Lattea, and the village base station is the natural reference point for beginners and families. There are open nursery slopes directly above the village buildings, easy to reach on foot or with the first lifts, which means the gentlest terrain is never far away when you need a break from the rest of the ski area.

If you would rather head into more demanding terrain, you need to make your way towards the high ground around Monti della Luna, where the black sections lie further from the bustle of the village. These are steeper flanks that call for skiers already at home on red-graded terrain, and they are best reached via the main red runs that tie the area together.

The red runs are the backbone of the ski area and stretch on towards Sportinia, where Sauze d'Oulx links up with Sestriere's piste network. With 70 lifts and 400 km of groomed pistes you can cover a great deal of ground in a day, but the way back to the village often goes via the same base station you set off from.

One tip that applies here in particular: the lifts closest to the village tend to be busiest in the middle of the day, since both beginners and those heading for Sportinia pass through the same hub. The vertical drop in the ski area, 1 279 metres, says something about how much climbing is needed before you reach the more demanding sectors further afield.
