How to ski in Gerlos
Around the village centre in Gerlos, at 1 247 metres, you will find the broad, gentle blue pistes that make the ski area so easy to get into straight from the lift stations. With 50 km of blue-graded terrain out of a total of 150 km, there is plenty of room for beginners and families to practise without having to cross steeper, busier runs, and you rarely need to go far from your accommodation to reach the first lifts up towards Isskogel.
The more demanding terrain lies higher up towards the summits, where the 12 km of black piste are found on the steeper flanks. The bulk of the network, a full 88 km, is red-graded, however, which means intermediate skiers can quickly move beyond the easiest sections and try longer, more varied descents in the sector around the home mountain.
Gerlos acts as a hub in the Zillertal Arena, with 52 lifts linking the area westwards towards Zell am Ziller and eastwards via Königsleiten towards Wald-Krimml. That allows you to plan a day out that takes in several sectors without returning to the village, although the distances involved mean you will need a full day's skiing to properly cover the entire arena.
One tip is to make the most of the morning hours on the pistes closest to the village, as traffic there often builds up around the middle of the day when more people are moving between sectors. The vertical drop between village and summit, from 1 247 to 2 500 metres, also means that snow quality tends to hold up better in the upper reaches later in the season.
