How to ski in Isola 2000
Isola 2000 is built around the village core at 2 000 metres, and beginners and families will find their terrain on the blue pistes clustered near the lower lift stations. Distances from the accommodation are short here, and there is no need for lengthy transfers to get the day's skiing under way, since the lifts radiate out directly from the village.
The 35 per cent red pistes and 15 per cent black sections lie higher up, towards the summit at 2 610 metres. There the landscape opens out above the tree line into more alpine terrain, with steeper flanks and freer lines for anyone wanting to test themselves away from the groomed blue runs.
The system of 22 lifts means the different parts of the area link up well, and it is easy to move between the lower and higher sectors without any great detours. With 120 kilometres of piste in total, a single day is rarely enough to explore it all, but the compact layout around the village still lets you sample several parts of the ski area during a stay.
Because the whole ski area lies above 2 000 metres, the snow is often of better quality higher up towards the 2610-metre level, particularly later in the season. The 610-metre vertical drop between village and summit is clearly noticeable in both temperature and light, so it is worth saving the higher sections for the middle of the day, once the sun has warmed the air.
