How to ski in Risoul

Beginners and families will find their slopes right by the village at 1 850 metres, where the blue pistes, making up 30 per cent of the terrain on offer, lie close to the lifts and accommodation. From here it is easy to slide out onto gentler terrain without having to venture far from the base station, which makes mornings straightforward for anyone skiing with children.

The more demanding terrain is found higher up towards the summit at 2 750 metres, where the red pistes, also 30 per cent of the system, and the black sections at 15 per cent offer steeper flanks and faster skiing. The higher you go, the more the terrain opens up towards challenging slopes that call for a steadier technique.

Risoul is linked to the neighbouring resort of Vars, and together they form the whole Forêt Blanche system with 185 kilometres of piste. This means you can travel between the two resorts on skis without changing pass, and an active day is more than enough to explore several parts of this large ski area before heading back towards Risoul.

The difference in altitude between the village and the summit is a full 900 metres of vertical drop, which means conditions can vary considerably between the valley and the top over the course of the same day. It is worth planning your skiing so that you make the most of the upper sections early, before the sun and the traffic from the 31 lifts have had time to affect the snow lower down.
