How to ski in Lofer

Lofer is built around a simple layout that makes the map easy to read. Beginners and families stick to the lower part of the valley, where wide, open blue pistes run down towards the village at 626 metres. From the centre, the modern 8-seater gondola takes you swiftly up into the system without having to cross any tougher terrain, so even the least experienced skier can get up and down without any trouble.

The higher up the map you go, the more demanding the terrain becomes. The red and black pistes lie in the upper sections towards the summit at 1 745 metres, often on steeper wooded flanks that contrast with the open fields further down. The vertical drop between village and summit, more than 1 100 metres, means the ski area offers considerably more variety than its 46 kilometres of pistes might suggest at first glance.

The ski area hangs together around the gondola, which acts as the backbone of the whole system, and with 10 lifts in total you can move between the open beginner fields and the narrower sections without lengthy detours. A single day is plenty to sample both the gentle slopes near the village and the steeper stretches higher up.

One practical tip is to spend the morning in the upper sections, where the snow stays in good condition the longest before the sun softens up the lower fields. Around lunchtime, ever more skiers gather at the gondola base station, so heading there early or late will save you time in the queue.
