Piste map of Mürren
The piste map of Mürren shows a ski area in the Berner Oberland stretching from the village at 1 650 metres up to the summit of the Schilthorn at 2 970 metres. The map sets out 14 lifts linking 54 kilometres of groomed pistes, from gentle nursery slopes close to the village to steep, open fields higher up towards the top station. The beginner terrain is concentrated in the lower part of the ski area, while the more demanding sections are found in the upper sector, with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. What makes this particular map unusual is how clearly it marks the position of the car-free village right in the middle of the system, making Mürren one of the most compact and easy to read Alpine ski areas in the region.

How to ski in Mürren
Mürren sits car-free in the middle of the ski area, which makes it unusually easy to get your bearings right from the off. Beginners and families stick to the lower part near the village, where the terrain is gentle and easy to take in while you get used to the lifts. It is only a short distance from here to the nursery slopes, so there is no lengthy transfer before you can start skiing.
The higher you go, the more demanding the pistes become. The upper sector towards the top station on the Schilthorn, 2 970 metres above sea level, offers steep, open fields with views towards the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Of the ski area's 54 kilometres of pistes, roughly 30 per cent are blue, 30 per cent red and 20 per cent black, giving a clear split between the more relaxed and the more technical sections.
The 14 lifts link the area in a way that lets you move between the different altitudes without unnecessary detours. The vertical drop between the village at 1 650 metres and the summit is around 1 320 metres, so in a single day you can take in both the gentle runs near the village and the steeper sections higher up.
A good tip is to ski the upper, more exposed pistes early in the day before the sun softens the snow too much, and save the lower parts near the village for the afternoon, when the shade keeps the snow in better condition for longer.
