Most of the blue and green pistes lie around the village bases and on the lower, open slopes, while the red pistes link the various sectors higher up towards the top stations. The black pistes are mainly found in the upper part of the area, close to the highest peaks, and are clearly separated from the broader family sectors further down.

How to ski in Valloire
Valloire sits at one end of the Galibier Thabor ski area, which stretches across two valley sides down to Valmeinier at the other end. Beginners and families will find most of their pistes around the village bases and on the lower, open slopes just above Valloire, reached directly by the lifts starting in the village. With 38 per cent blue pistes, this is where you spend the first few days before heading further up into the system.
The red-graded pistes, which make up a good half of the area's 160 kilometres, link the various sectors higher up and lead towards the top stations. Here the terrain becomes steeper and more varied, and it is in the upper part, near the highest peaks at 2 750 metres, that the black pistes are found. They lie clearly apart from the family sectors further down and call for skiers who are already at home on red runs.
With 31 lifts tying the two valley sides together, it is possible to move between Valloire and Valmeinier in a single day, although the distances mean you should plan your route before setting off. The vertical drop between the village at 1 430 metres and the summits is considerable, and this shows clearly in the snow conditions.
A practical tip is to make the most of the morning in the upper part, where the snow stays cold and in good shape the longest, and then head down towards the sun-warmed slopes by the village later in the day once they have softened nicely. Around lunchtime the sectors connecting the two valley sides tend to be at their busiest, so anyone wanting to avoid queues would do well to shift that journey to the morning or late afternoon.
