The views from up here are breathtaking, and on a clear day you can see hundreds of alpine peaks in every direction. Obergurgl is known for its exclusive and relaxed atmosphere. The resort has a rich selection of good restaurants and mountain-lodge-style hotels, as well as well-developed spa facilities. The après-ski culture is discreet and refined rather than rowdy, and a gin and tonic by the fireplace at one of the elegant hotels sets the tone for the Obergurgl experience.

Snow reliability in Obergurgl
Obergurgl is one of the Alps' most snow-sure destinations, thanks to its extremely high location between 1,930 and 3,080 metres. The season normally runs from mid-November to early May, giving one of the longest ski seasons in Austria. The vast majority of the pistes lie above 2,000 metres and face north, meaning snow is preserved excellently throughout the winter. A ski holiday in Obergurgl offers highly reliable snow conditions whatever the winter month, with snow cannons supplementing the lower sections for extra peace of mind.
Best time to travel to Obergurgl
The best time for a ski holiday in Obergurgl depends on what you're after. The long season from November to May gives great flexibility. January and February bring the coldest conditions, with daytime temperatures around minus 9 to minus 7 degrees and ensured powder, perfect for anyone prioritising skiing in Obergurgl under optimal conditions. March and April offer sunny skiing with milder weather, but still excellent piste conditions on the higher sections. If you want to experience Obergurgl in peace and quiet without the crowds, the weeks in January after New Year are ideal.
Will there be lift queues in Obergurgl?
Obergurgl is part of Gurgl, and the lift system there carries 45,661 people an hour across 25 lifts. 17 of the 25 lifts are gondolas, cable cars or high-speed chairlifts, the kind that clear a queue quickly. The fastest lifts carry up to 2,526 people an hour, for example TOP Wurmkogl I. That is roughly the same capacity per kilometre of piste as an average resort on this site, so queues only build when it is really busy. The queue you actually notice is almost always down in the valley between eight and half past nine. If you are on the lift before eight you avoid it.
When is Obergurgl busiest?

How to get to Obergurgl
You arrange your own travel: we sell the stay, not the transport. Here are the three ways people get to Obergurgl, so you can pick the one that suits you.
By air. The nearest airport is Innsbruck (INN). Pure flying time from London is around 2 hours, and from there it is 1 hour on to Obergurgl. You can cover the last stretch in one of two ways:
- Private transfer. A private driver meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation with no stops. The price is per car, not per person, ski boxes can be booked in advance, and the driver waits even if the flight is late.
- Hire car at the airport. With SmartCarRental you collect the car in the arrivals hall. That gets you to the neighbouring villages on the same lift pass, lets you shop at valley prices rather than resort prices, and frees you from transfer timetables. Winter tyres are standard at Alpine desks.
By car. Many drive. Taking the Eurotunnel from Folkestone and arriving at Calais, it's roughly 1,087 km to Obergurgl, around 11.7 hours of pure driving time through France. Remember that studded tyres are banned in France and Germany.
