The Wurmkogel summit, with its panoramic viewing platform, and the steep black runs down towards Hochgurgl dominate the right-hand side of the map.

How to ski in Obergurgl

Skiing in Obergurgl starts from the village at 1 930 metres, which means beginners and families can get out onto easy slopes straight from their accommodation without having to take a lift to a separate nursery area. The gentler terrain lies close to the village, offering plenty of scope to practise in a relaxed setting before heading further up into the ski area.

The more demanding terrain is found higher up, particularly around Wurmkogel, where steep black pistes drop down towards Hochgurgl. This side of the ski area appeals to skiers looking for serious gradient and more challenging terrain than anything found around the village.

Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are linked by the Top Mountain Crosspoint, so you can move between the two sectors within the same day and make the most of the full 112 kilometres of pistes and 25 lifts. The vertical drop, from 1 930 metres in the village to 3 080 metres at the top, means a tour of the ski area involves substantial height differences to plan for.

A good tip is to save your final runs for the upper, glacier-side section, where the snow quality holds up best thanks to the altitude, which delivers reliable snow from as early as November and well into May. Lower down towards the village the snow can become heavier later in the season, so anyone after the best conditions would do well to head up towards the Wurmkogel sectors.
